What is patch repairs and re-skims?
Not every wall needs a full re-plaster. Often the right answer is a careful repair to the damaged area, or a fresh skim over the whole wall so old patches, cracks and dents disappear under one consistent surface. Choosing between the two is about the condition of the plaster, not just how it looks on the surface.
Small repairs are where skill really shows. A patch has to be cut back to sound material, built up in the right layers and finished flush, so nobody can tell where it was once the wall is painted. We take on small and awkward jobs with the same care as larger ones, inside and out.
When you might need it
- Making good after an electrician, plumber or kitchen fitter
- Cracks that keep coming back through the paint
- A ceiling damaged by a leak that has now been fixed
- Holes left by removed fixtures, radiators or shelving
- Patchy walls with years of old filler that need a fresh skim
- Damaged external render around sills, corners and bases
The Ash Plastering process
- 01
Assess
We tap and check the surrounding plaster to see how far the damage really goes, so the repair is not undone by weak material around it.
- 02
Cut back
Loose and blown material is removed to a sound edge, and the background is treated so the new plaster bonds well.
- 03
Build up
The repair is filled in layers, then finished flush, or the whole wall is re-skimmed for a single, even surface.
- 04
Leave it neat
Edges are feathered, dust and debris cleared, and you are left with a wall ready for decorating once dry.
What affects the price
Every property is different, so we give a fixed, written quote after a free site visit rather than a guess over the phone. The main things that shape the cost are:
- How many areas need repairing and how large they are
- Whether a patch will blend or a full re-skim is the better finish
- The depth of damage and the background behind it
- Interior or exterior, and the access required
- Whether the cause, such as a leak, has been fixed first
Common problems it fixes
- Recurring cracks and loose plaster
- Water damaged ceilings and walls
- Visible old patches and uneven filler
- Chipped corners and damaged reveals
