What is ceilings and coving?
Ceilings are the hardest surface in the house to plaster well. Everything is overhead, every flaw is lit by the window and the light fitting, and old ceilings often hide cracked boards, failing lath and plaster or layers of textured coating. A great ceiling is flat, smooth and seamless from wall to wall.
Coving is the finishing detail where wall meets ceiling. It hides the junction, covers small cracks along the edge and adds character, from a simple modern profile to something more traditional for a period home. Fitted well, mitres are tight and lines run straight across the full length of the room.
When you might need it
- Artex or textured ceilings you want flat and modern
- Cracked or sagging ceilings, including old lath and plaster
- Ceilings damaged by leaks, loft work or new downlights
- Sloping ceilings and dormers in loft rooms
- Adding or replacing coving to finish a room
The Ash Plastering process
- 01
Protect
The room is sheeted, furniture covered and light fittings made safe by your electrician where required.
- 02
Prepare
Loose areas are repaired, boards secured, joints scrimmed and Artex or paint surfaces sealed so the finish bonds.
- 03
Plaster
The ceiling is skimmed or over-boarded and skimmed, working in a planned sequence so the whole ceiling is finished evenly.
- 04
Detail
Coving is cut, mitred and fixed, joints are filled and the room is left clean and ready for decorating.

- Skim only, or over-boarding and skimming
- Condition of the existing ceiling and any textured coating
- Number of light fittings, downlights and obstacles
- Coving profile and the length of the room
Common problems it fixes
- Dated Artex and textured finishes
- Cracks along joints and around the edges
- Sagging or damaged ceilings
- Tired coving with open mitres
