Plastering and Skimming

Skimming is the thin finishing coat of plaster, usually two passes of multi-finish, applied over existing plaster or new plasterboard to leave a smooth, hard surface. Full plastering goes further: the old, failing plaster is removed back to the brick or block, a backing coat is applied to straighten the wall, and then the finish coat goes on top.

Rendering

Render is the protective coat on the outside of a building. Done properly it keeps rain out of the masonry, hides tired or mismatched brickwork and can completely change the character of a house. Done badly it cracks, stains and lets water in behind it, which is far harder to put right than the original job.

Dry Lining and Plasterboarding

Dry lining means fixing plasterboard to walls, ceilings or a metal or timber frame, instead of applying wet backing plaster to the masonry. It is quicker to dry out, gives very straight surfaces and makes it easy to add insulation, acoustic boards or moisture resistant boards where the room needs them.

Patch Repairs and Re-skims

Not every wall needs a full re-plaster. Often the right answer is a careful repair to the damaged area, or a fresh skim over the whole wall so old patches, cracks and dents disappear under one consistent surface. Choosing between the two is about the condition of the plaster, not just how it looks on the surface.

Ceilings and Coving

Ceilings are the hardest surface in the house to plaster well. Everything is overhead, every flaw is lit by the window and the light fitting, and old ceilings often hide cracked boards, failing lath and plaster or layers of textured coating. A great ceiling is flat, smooth and seamless from wall to wall.

New Builds, Extensions and Renovations

On a build or renovation the plasterer sits right in the middle of the programme. Electricians and plumbers need to be finished first, decorators and kitchen fitters are waiting for dry walls, and any delay pushes everything back. Reliable timing and clear communication matter as much as the finish itself.
